Peter has garnered a number of writing awards in various forms in which he works. These include three national second-place awards for poetry - The Emily Dickinson Award, The Lyric Poetry Award, and the George Bogin Memorial Award, given by the Poetry Society of America, which is considered to be the preeminent professional poetry organization in the world.

In the field of journalism, he was named one of the New York Times' Voices Of The New Generation.

For theatre, he won a Dramatists Guild Of America/CBS New American Play Festival award.
